A row of buttons down the back leaves the front of this planned raglan dress smooth and uninterrupted. A small rounded collar and cuffed sleeves balance the fitted waist, while curved pocket joins lead into a full upper-calf skirt. The aubergine previews with ivory collar and cuffs show one original 1950s-inspired design on the same adult female model.

A closed front with a working back opening

  • Small two-section rounded turn-down collar around a closed high neckline
  • Diagonal front and rear raglan joins running from the sides of the neckline toward the underarms
  • Lightly shaped woven bodice, with no front button placket
  • Five working center-back bodice buttons, from below the collar to just above the waist
  • Below-elbow raglan sleeves finished with narrow contrast cuff bands
  • Level natural-waist seam joining the fitted bodice to a smooth, full flared upper-calf skirt
  • Two curved front yoke-seam pockets, with a plain rear skirt and center-back construction seam
  • Narrow matching belt with a small covered front buckle

The skirt fullness comes from its flared cut, without gathering or elastic at the waist. The back button row provides the bodice opening; no rear zipper, front buttons or lacing is planned. This release covers the cuffed raglan version shown.

Fabric and fastening plans

Opaque cotton poplin or fine cotton sateen with enough body for the collar and pocket joins is the starting direction. Test the main fabric and collar fabric together for washing, shrinkage, pressing and seam bulk. A light support may be needed for the back opening and rounded collar. Material quantities, ease, button spacing and finished measurements will be settled during preparation.

The English guide will address joining the raglan seams, shaping and finishing the collar, making the back button opening, adding the cuff bands and inset pocket yokes, joining the waist and leveling the flared hem. A full fitting sample should check raglan movement, neck coverage, rear fastening reach, pocket access and the skirt when seated. The rear image shows the intended opening, rather than a function-tested fastening.

Compare the day-dress construction

The 1950s-inspired shirtwaist dress uses a pointed collar, front buttons and short set-in sleeves. This design keeps the front closed and combines a rounded collar with diagonal raglan joins and rear bodice buttons.
