A woven camisole needs enough ease for movement and dressing, even when its outline looks light and close to the body. This guide focuses on a pattern with narrow adjustable straps and a shaped facing around the upper edge. Use a woven pattern that supplies those pieces and markings. A knit camisole pattern or a photograph cannot provide the same cutting and fit information.
1. Prepare a realistic first version
Choose a stable, lightweight woven for your first attempt and prepare it using the care method intended for the finished garment. Press without dragging the fabric out of shape. Check the pattern's body measurements, finished measurements, grainlines and whether seam allowances are included. Keep its specified cutting direction; cutting a straight-grain design on the bias changes its behaviour.
Make a trial version in a fabric with similar weight and drape. Include the facing and usable straps, because they affect how the neckline sits. Confirm that you can put the camisole on and take it off without forcing the seams. A pullover woven top depends on sufficient opening and body ease.
2. Cut and protect the upper edges
Lay each piece flat, aligning the grainline with the fabric rather than a crooked cut edge. Transfer darts, notches and strap positions accurately. Handle neckline and armhole curves as little as possible, and staystitch where the pattern directs before they stretch during assembly. Keep the cut facing beside its matching body piece so similar shapes do not become confused.
Test the needle on two layers of your actual fabric. A Microtex needle is one option for fine or densely woven materials; SCHMETZ describes its narrow, sharp point and suitable fabrics in its Microtex guidance. Choose the size through a sample, checking for puckering and pulled threads.
3. Sew the body and prepare the facing
Sew any darts before closing the side seams, following the pattern's pressing direction. Assemble the body and facing in the stated order, then finish exposed allowances. Press each seam as you complete it. Keep a clean distinction between the outer body, which will show, and the facing, which will turn inside.
For a very sheer fabric, inspect the facing through the outer layer before continuing. Its shape and colour may be visible. Make that decision on the sample rather than discovering an unwanted outline after the top edge is finished.
4. Build and position the straps
Sew and turn fabric straps to the pattern's finished width, or use its specified strap material. Match rings and sliders to that width. Make both adjustable units using the hardware threading instructions and check that neither has a twist. Temporarily baste the front ends and back ring tabs to the marked attachment positions.
Check the trial version before permanently enclosing these ends. Adjust strap length and placement separately: shortening a strap raises the whole upper edge and does not automatically correct a neckline that is too wide.
5. Attach and understitch the facing
Place the facing and camisole right sides together, with strap ends between them as directed. Keep the remaining strap lengths clear of the seam. Sew the upper edge, then grade bulky allowances and clip curved sections only as needed, without cutting the stitching.
Press the allowance toward the facing. Understitch through the facing and allowance, close to the joining seam, keeping the outer garment clear. Turn the facing inside and press. 6. Check the fit before hemming
Try the camisole with the undergarment you intend to wear. Sit, reach and bend gently; inspect the neckline, armholes and side seams. Let a drapey sample settle before marking the hem level. Finish the hem using the pattern's allowance, test the care method on scraps and keep your adjustments with the pattern.
