18th-Century-Inspired Open-Front Gown PDF Sewing Pattern

A shaped bodice and an open overskirt define this costume family. The original gown remains View B; the blue and rose previews introduce a more elaborate View A, inspired by a 1930s interpretation of Louis XVI fancy dress. Both are original historical-inspired developments rather than authenticated eighteenth-century reconstructions.

View A: draped Louis XVI costume interpretation

• Fitted princess-seamed bodice, broad square neckline and pointed waist
• Opaque decorative front bodice panel with three small ribbon bows
• Short fitted sleeves with two long ivory lace flounces
• Full floor-length outer skirt gathered into two scalloped front swags, showing a separate decorative front skirt panel
• Plain full gathered back, a concealed center-back bodice opening and a planned skirt entry
• A separate hoop foundation planned to support the rounded skirt volume

Powder blue with ivory lace and silver edging, or rose pink with the same trim, are color suggestions for this view. The center skirt panel supplies the visible decoration; it is not a substitute for the full petticoat underneath.

View B: original open-front gown

This view retains the shaped bodice with a center-front opening, open-front overskirt gathered into the waist, elbow-length sleeves with a planned cuff finish, and a separate full petticoat with its own fastening. The original three garment previews show this simpler view.

Planned pieces included

This order covers the two gown views, View A's decorative front panel and hoop foundation, and the separate full petticoat already included in this design family. The petticoat remains part of the package and can be planned with either view. Its fullness and length must be checked against the selected gown and support. The underlayer image shows the hoop and full petticoat separately as concept studies; it is not a drafted construction sheet or proof of support.

Fabric and sewing notes

A stable woven cotton can help assess the first bodice and skirt sample. Medium-weight silk, silk-look satin or a suitable woven can give View A its fuller costume finish. Test the shell, lining, lace and skirt support together. Check sitting, movement, bodice coverage, access to fastenings and the gown's full footprint before final materials. Corsetry, wigs, jewelry and finished garments are not included.
