1920s Button-Back Tabard Apron PDF Sewing Pattern

A deep V neckline and long rounded front give this 1920s-inspired tabard apron its clear outline. Broad shoulder sections lead into an upper back panel, whose rounded lower corners fasten with two buttons. The apron sits loosely over everyday clothing, with useful patch pockets at the front.

Color and cloth

A stable cotton with enough body to hold the bound curves is the starting fabric direction. Muted terracotta with ivory binding makes the outline easy to read; slate blue gives the same construction a quieter alternative. Use a supple binding that bends smoothly around the V and curved edges. Preshrink both fabrics and test the contrast for color transfer before cutting.

Fit over the clothes you will wear

Make the sample over the intended underlayer. Check that the shoulders stay in place, the side edges clear the arms and the front does not pull when bending. Position the back buttons only after testing how the panels overlap. The preparation guide will address supporting the button points, turning the V cleanly and easing binding around the rounded hem.

This apron uses a broad buttoned back panel. The 1916 cross-back apron instead has crossed back wings and shoulder buttons. Keep that distinction in mind when choosing the back coverage and fastening style you prefer.
