1940s Double-Breasted Windbreaker PDF Sewing Pattern

A bloused waist, paired front buttons and a detachable hood define this 1940s-inspired windbreaker jacket. The short body gathers into a fitted woven waistband, balancing two flap chest pockets and long cuffed sleeves. Navy with ecru details shows the hooded version; deep wine shows the smooth-shouldered version with the hood removed.

Two sleeves and a removable hood

• Waist-length bloused body with a distinct fitted fabric waistband
• Double-breasted front with five pairs of buttons in the proposed design, including a pair on the waistband
• Two symmetrical chest patch pockets with plain flaps
• View A: built-up shoulder line with controlled pleats at the sleeve heads
• View B: smooth, plain set-in sleeve heads
• Long sleeves gathered into narrow buttoned wrist cuffs
• Pointed lined hood with a center seam and a planned button-on neckline attachment
• Simple round neckline for wearing the jacket with the hood removed

Fabric and construction planning

A stable medium-weight wool, gabardine or similar woven fabric is a useful starting point. Sample the fabric, lining and support together before choosing the finished combination. The waistband and cuffs use woven cloth rather than rib knit. Lining, interfacing and shoulder support will be addressed during preparation.

Check the chest and back ease over the intended underlayer, the waist position, shoulder movement and sleeve length in a fitting sample. The hood needs room around the face and enough depth to turn the head comfortably. Test the detachable edge so it lies neatly with the hood both attached and removed.

The English guide preparation will address the two sleeve-head treatments, pocket flaps, double-breasted fastening, gathered waistband, cuffs and hood attachment. “Windbreaker” describes the historical jacket style here; no windproof or waterproof performance is promised.
