1970s Hooded Bell-Sleeve Caftan PDF Sewing Pattern

Prepared after purchase: USD 25. An attached hood and long bell sleeves give this original 1970s-inspired caftan a distinct outline. Its loose ankle-length body falls without a waist seam or belt.

Planned design

The separate sleeves join at low, angular armholes and widen toward open wrist hems. A short slit below the high neckline closes with one small button and loop. The attached hood has a centre seam, while one left-side hem slit adds room for movement. Narrow trim outlines the hood, neckline opening, sleeve hems and side slit.

The sea-green front and back show the hood lowered, and the burnt-orange front shows the same hood raised. These are two positions of one attached hood, not separate hooded and hoodless pattern views. Sea green with mustard-gold edging and burnt orange with navy edging are fabric suggestions for the same design.

Fabric and preparation

A soft opaque woven, such as an appropriate cotton-viscose or viscose challis, is the starting point. The body and hood need compatible drape, while the narrow trim should follow curves without drawing them tight. Test shrinkage and color transfer before combining contrasting materials.

A sample must establish shoulder balance, angular armhole depth, hood volume, sleeve reach, neckline access and hem clearance. The long side slit needs a supported upper end. This preparation brief covers the caftan shown, with no separate belt or additional garment.
