A smooth bodice with side-gathered volume

• High, shallow boat neckline and sleeveless shoulders
• Curved shaping seams through the fitted front and back bodice
• An elongated bodice ending in a gently pointed lower join at the front and back
• Full mid-calf skirt with smooth center areas and soft gathers toward the side panels
• Concealed center-back zipper, finished neckline and armholes, and a plain turned hem
• No separate waistband, buttons, belt, tiers, pockets or slit

Fabric and fitting

An opaque cotton poplin or supple cotton sateen is the starting fabric direction. Choose cloth with enough body to hold the neckline but enough flexibility for the gathered side panels. A very stiff fabric could add unwanted bulk at the low waist, while a sheer cloth would need a lining decision during preparation.

The English guide will cover shaping the bodice, supporting the pointed joins, distributing side gathers, finishing the neckline and armholes, and inserting the concealed zipper. Make a complete fitting sample to check shoulder width, armhole coverage, waist position, seated comfort and zipper access before cutting final cloth. The finished measurements and gathering ratios will be established with the draft.
