Develop a 1960s-inspired woven peasant dress with a square elastic neckline, long raglan sleeves and a single raised-waist casing. The softly gathered upper body flows into a plain flared knee-skimming hem.

Raglan sleeves and three simple elastic placements

• Square front and back necklines formed by narrow elastic casings along the body and sleeve upper edges.
• Diagonal raglan joining seams between neckline corners and underarms, with covered shoulders.
• Roomy full-length sleeves gathered into narrow elastic wrist casings.
• One raised-waist elastic casing below the bust; the dress body remains continuous through that line.
• Soft upper-body gathers above the casing and a plain knee-skimming A-line lower body.
• Woven pullover design without a belt, zipper, fully shirred torso or tiered skirt.

This order covers the single long-sleeved knee-skimming dress shown. It does not include a top, maxi view, belt or fully shirred bodice. The raised line is an elastic casing in the continuous body, rather than a separate cut waist seam.

Fabric and fitting development

Planned for opaque supple woven cotton, rayon challis or suitable lightweight woven crepe. Stretch jersey is not the intended fabric. Fabric recovery, drape, opacity and material quantities will be assessed during preparation.

Check the neckline elastic length, raglan reach, raised-waist placement, sleeve fullness and hem length in a complete fitting sample. Elastic should hold the neckline comfortably while allowing movement without excessive pressure.

Compare the construction

Woven raglan sleeve edges join the body to form the elastic square neckline, and one casing shapes a continuous body below the bust. This differs from the knit ruched empire bodice, shaped princess-seam mini dress, full-torso shirred maxi and round-neck babydoll with a cut underbust seam.
