Wide legs and practical patch pockets

• High waist with elastic enclosed in a wide, softly gathered casing
• Generous mid-thigh legs with a gently flared outline
• Two large front patch pockets with diagonal openings and matching topstitching
• Plain back with a center seam and no back pockets
• Deep turned hems with a simple stitched finish
• Pull-on construction without a fly, belt loops, cuffs or front pleats

Terracotta previews show the front and back. The blue preview presents the same cut in a different woven fabric color. The accompanying ivory top is for styling; this order covers the shorts only. Color choices remain within this single design.

Fabric and sewing

A medium-light linen-cotton blend, soft linen or suitable chambray is a starting point. Choose an opaque woven that holds a pocket edge while allowing the legs to fall loosely. Very fluid cloth may let a loaded pocket pull against the front, while stiff fabric can make the gathered waist bulky. Wash and press a swatch before deciding.

The English guide will address the elastic casing, pocket-edge reinforcement, matching topstitching and broad hems. Preparation must establish the elastic length, casing clearance, rise and seated ease together. Check the waist over the hips when dressing, then test sitting, bending and walking in a complete fitting sample. Pocket depth and leg length can only be assessed reliably on that sample.
