Japanese Knot Bag PDF Sewing Pattern

Prepared after purchase. Digital delivery within 1 business day. A long fabric loop passes through a shorter one to gather the opening of this planned Japanese knot bag. The unequal handles grow from a soft rounded body, leaving a simple hand-carry shape without metal hardware.

Two unequal closed loops

• Soft rounded front and rear panels with a curved upper opening
• One long and one short integral closed fabric loop handle
• A thread-through closure made by passing the long loop through the short loop
• Separate lining and clean turned, topstitched edges
• Plain faces and one undivided compartment

Forest green with ochre lining is shown fastened and open, with the loops released to make their unequal lengths visible. Plum with flax lining shows the same design fastened. There are no loose tie ends, bow, pockets, zipper, clasp or added shoulder strap. The sewn loops stay closed when the bag is opened.

Turning the loops and shaping the mouth

A stable, supple woven cotton is the starting fabric. Choose a lining with similar handling, and sample any support before adding it: overly stiff layers may stop the short loop from drawing around the long one. The turning sequence and loop joins need careful planning to leave clean edges and a smooth handhold.

The English guide will address the curved body, lining, unequal loop construction, turning openings and final edge stitching. Make a sample to check hand clearance, threading, access to the compartment and whether the closure behaves as intended with your belongings. The loop gathers the opening; it is not a lock or a tested security closure. No load rating or shoulder-carry fit is promised. Finished dimensions will be confirmed during preparation.
