Fabric starting point
A soft wool blend, substantial cotton flannel or another medium-weight woven could be tested. Avoid choosing thickness alone: the collar, cuffs and pocket flaps need to turn cleanly. If using checks, plan their position before cutting and allow room for matching. Test the lining against the outer cloth so the two layers slide without twisting or pulling.
Development and fitting
Try the sample over the clothing it is intended to cover. Check forward reach, sleeve length and room across the upper back. Cuff openings must allow easy dressing, and the curved hem needs enough clearance when sitting. Lining ease, pocket reinforcement and the collar assembly will be resolved during development rather than borrowed from a lighter shirt pattern.
