Check the hem while standing, walking and climbing a step, then consider whether the length suits the wearer's usual shoes.

Fabric and sewing

A supple sweater knit or soft brushed knit is a starting point for the blanket effect. Compare recovery, thickness and hanging weight before selecting the material. A textured surface can hide small seams, but it can also make accurate marking and seam removal more difficult. Test seam samples with the fabric's pile running in the intended direction.

Sewing would concentrate on supported shoulder joins, evenly finished front edges and cuffs that do not become bulky. Allow a sample to hang before deciding the final hem position. The open construction leaves the quality of the inner seam finishes visible, so choose a finish that remains comfortable against the clothing beneath it.
