A square neckline and front lacing frame the proposed fitted bodice of this Renaissance-inspired outer gown. The bodice joins its own closed, full skirt at a reinforced waist seam, creating one dress with separately cut sleeves attached to the bodice.

Planned construction

• Supported square-neck bodice with reinforced front lacing
• Closed full skirt joined through a weight-bearing waist seam
• Concealed skirt opening below the bodice lacing
• Separately cut long sleeves attached at the armholes
• Bodice lining and a planned modesty layer behind the lacing

Fabric and fitting

Consider a stable linen blend, cotton or manageable brocade with compatible support fabric. Sample the bodice layers and skirt weight together before selecting reinforcement. Check lacing tension, waist balance and arm movement in a complete fitting sample. The gathered chemise is a separate underlayer project; assess its bulk with this gown before choosing sizes. This is a new period-inspired costume design, with no claim of authenticated Renaissance construction.
