A short slit interrupts one front shaping seam in this planned square-neck mini dress. Broad shoulder sections frame the open neckline, while curved panels follow the bust and waist before widening slightly at the hem. The clean outline takes a 1990s-inspired direction in berry red or cobalt blue.

The slit belongs to the front: the rear hem remains uninterrupted. Both colors keep the same neckline, panel arrangement and opening position. The long panel seams distinguish this project from the darted, below-knee 1950s-inspired sheath dress.

Fabric and sewing

Consider a stable cotton sateen, light linen suiting or a similar opaque woven with enough body to show the panel lines. The first draft will use non-stretch fabric. Sample the neckline support and any lining with the outer cloth before confirming their construction.

The guide will address matching the curved seams, keeping the square neckline even, installing the zipper and reinforcing the top of the slit. Check bust shaping, shoulder placement, armhole coverage and seated hem coverage in a complete fitting sample. Establish a comfortable slit depth through movement checks before cutting the final cloth.
