Notched lapels and an overlapping double-breasted front bring tailored waistcoat details to a below-knee dress. A self-fabric belt would define the waist, while the continuous skirt gives this design a different role from a short layering vest or a strap pinafore.

Fabric and sewing notes

A medium-weight suiting, linen blend or softly structured twill could hold the lapels without making the skirt rigid. Test lining and interfacing with the outer fabric. A fitting sample should check armhole depth, front overlap, seated comfort and stride before the final hem is set.
