A closely shaped crown and a short bell-shaped brim would frame the face in this 1920s-inspired cloche. The planned hat is made by cutting and sewing fabric panels. Its construction uses seams and lining rather than crochet, knitting or a blocked felt hat body.

Planned construction

• Shaped crown panels following the curve of the head
• Short downward brim fitted close to the crown
• Separate lining with enclosed internal seam allowances
• Inner band and placement guidance for an optional ribbon trim

Fabric and sewing notes

Consider a fine wool woven or a medium-weight cotton that can hold a soft curve. Fabric thickness and interfacing will affect the finished circumference, so the crown and brim need sampling together. Fit checks should include head circumference, crown depth and a clear field of vision below the brim.
