Softly flared legs and a high waist give these planned tap pants their 1930s-inspired shape. Also known as French knickers, this design is intended as woven underwear, with the bias grain providing drape around the hips and a loose finish at the leg openings.

Planned construction

• Front and back sections placed on the bias grain
• High waist finished with a narrow elastic casing
• Loose leg openings with a fine turned hem
• Enclosed or finely finished seams for lightweight fabric

Fabric and sewing notes

A light silk satin, suitable viscose or another smooth woven with fluid drape could suit the brief. Test opacity, seam slippage and the way the bias relaxes before choosing the final fabric. Preparation should address grain alignment, balanced leg lengths and enough hip clearance for pulling the garment on.
