A tailored jacket gains a softer outline from a separate shoulder cape in this 1930s detachable cape jacket sewing pattern. The planned design combines the clear shape of a hip-length jacket with an additional layer that falls around the upper arms. It is intended as a distinctive vintage-inspired outer layer for wearing over a blouse or simple day dress.

Planned design

The jacket has a shaped waist, notched lapels and regular long set-in sleeves. Six front buttons form two vertical rows, with two practical patch pockets below. The matching cape attaches around the shoulders and back neckline with small buttons, leaving the jacket front visible. Its gently curved edge reaches roughly elbow level, and the jacket sleeves continue underneath to the wrists.

Fabric and sewing notes

Chestnut brown and sand are shown as two fabric ideas for one cut. A soft woven wool or wool blend with enough body for the lapels and enough flexibility for the cape is the intended direction. Test the layers together so the shoulder attachment does not become bulky, and select compatible interlining during preparation.

The sewing work will involve shaping a jacket, setting sleeves, forming lapels and planning the cape attachment. A fitting sample should check shoulder balance and arm movement with the cape both attached and removed. The concept images show the cape attached; exact internal finishing will be defined when the pattern is prepared.
