Edwardian Rolled-Brim Hat PDF Sewing Pattern

A domed gored crown and a sweeping rolled brim give this Edwardian-inspired cloth hat its sculpted outline. The main view pairs black velvet with a muted plum band and flat side bow. Warm ivory corduroy with black ribbon offers a lighter interpretation of the same broad-brim design.

Two brim views, one crown family

• Moderately tall rounded crown with curved vertical panel seams
• View A: broad circular brim that rolls upward at the side and back
• View B: narrower bias-cut brim with an asymmetric rise and gentle sweep over the temple
• Applied ribbon band with a small flat folded bow

The crown development is planned around six gores. This is an original drafting choice, not a claim about a purchased historical pattern. The restrained bow and ribbon let the crown and brim remain the focus.

Choosing the cloth

Velvet gives the rolled edge a soft, deep surface; fine-wale corduroy makes the panel direction more visible. A stable wool can also be considered after sampling. Match the support to the outer fabric so the brim holds its rise without becoming rigid. Check nap direction, pressing marks and the thickness of the enclosed brim seam before cutting the final hat.

Measure the intended headband position over the hairstyle you plan to wear. A fitting sample should check crown depth, clearance around the ears, secure placement and the brim's sight line. Preparation will address joining the crown panels, supporting the brim, managing bias stretch and setting the ribbon without puckering.
