A broad shirred yoke with a simple long skirt

• Adult women's separate skirt with a natural waist position

The yoke and lower skirt are planned in the same opaque woven fabric. The elastic stitching supplies the upper section's stretch; the design does not rely on stretch-knit fabric. There is no separate narrow elastic casing at the waist. One closed lower section completes this design without tiers, a wrap opening, slit, pockets, ties or a zipper.

Fabric and elastic-thread preparation

Light opaque cotton woven is the starting fabric direction. It should gather readily without becoming bulky through the many rows of shirring. The muted indigo previews show one solid color direction; their texture is illustrative. Prewash the chosen cloth and test opacity, shrinkage and how the fabric responds to elastic-thread stitching before cutting.

The English sewing guide will address testing the shirring on a fabric sample, securing elastic-thread ends, joining the yoke, distributing lower-skirt gathers and finishing the long hem. Yoke depth, row spacing, fabric allowance and the top-edge finish will be resolved during preparation. The preview does not establish a fixed row count or a tested elastic setting.

Check the yoke before cutting final cloth

Make a complete sample in comparable fabric. Confirm that the shirred section expands far enough to pass over the hips, recovers after repeated stretching and rests comfortably at the waist while sitting. Check the yoke-to-skirt join for strain and uneven gathering. Assess walking room and the finished length with the intended shoes, then let the skirt settle before balancing its hem. Shirring changes with fabric, thread and machine settings; the planned fit still needs wearer checks.
