This planned summer set pairs a gathered tie-front top with relaxed ruffle shorts. The top has broad shoulder straps, a square neckline and a short peplum below the shaping. Two front ties form a visible centre detail, while the shorts repeat the gathering in a narrow ruffle around each leg opening.

The pieces are intended to work as a coordinated outfit, so the peplum depth and shorts rise would be assessed together. For the shorts, assess hip room and the leg opening before deciding how full the ruffles should be.

Fabric and sewing

A lightweight textured cotton, soft poplin or a suitable double gauze can be considered as a starting fabric. The material needs to gather without creating thick channels or bulky ruffle joins. Check opacity for both pieces; the same cloth can appear more transparent over the shorts than across a gathered top.

Sewing would focus on even channels, smoothly turned ties, comfortable waist elastic and consistent ruffle fullness. Make a channel-and-tie sample and test it after pressing. Use the fitting stage to balance the top and shorts proportions, then finish the narrow hems in a way that preserves the fabric's soft movement.
