A gathered fabric pouch would hold the hair at the back of the head, with a shaped upper band giving this planned snood its vintage-inspired outline. This is a sewing project for a hair accessory. It uses cut fabric and an elastic casing, rather than a crochet net or a neck cowl.

Planned construction

• Roomy fabric pouch shaped to gather behind the head
• Upper band supporting the opening above the hair
• Elastic casing around the lower opening
• Neatly enclosed band joins and fine internal seam finishes

Fabric and sewing notes

A light cotton lawn or another fine woven could keep the pouch easy to gather. A smooth fabric may slide against the hair, so grip and elastic tension need checking in a sample. Hair volume, the position of the band and comfort behind the ears matter as much as head circumference.
