Develop a 1970s-inspired caftan whose curved upper yoke continues directly into the long sleeves. A smooth ungathered body falls from the yoke to the ankle, with short side slits and no waist seam.

One continuous yoke and sleeve shape above a smooth body

• Shallow bateau neckline with a short center-back neck opening and planned small loop fastening.
• Curved horizontal upper-chest and upper-back yokes.
• Yoke shoulder sections continue directly into long sleeves; no conventional set-in armholes at the shoulder.
• Body joins smoothly below the yoke without gathers, shirring, pleats or a waist seam.
• Loose slightly flared ankle-length body with short side hem slits.
• Long gently flared sleeve ends finished with plain open hems; no cuffs or belt.

This order covers the single ankle-length caftan. It does not include a separate top, hood, belt or gathered nightgown view. The sage and ivory color blocking highlights the yoke that continues into the sleeves above the smooth ungathered body.

Fabric and fitting development

Planned for opaque soft woven linen blends, chambray or another breathable woven fabric that falls smoothly below the yoke. Choose compatible weights for a two-color version. Fabric suitability, neckline support and quantities will be established during preparation.

Assess the bateau neck opening, yoke depth, shoulder reach, sleeve movement and side-slit placement in a complete fitting sample. The cut-on yoke sleeves need comfortable reach without distorting the body below them.

Compare the construction

The upper yoke continues into the sleeves and the long body is ungathered. This differs from the V-inset caftan with sleeves cut from its body, the gathered-yoke nightgown with separate conventional sleeves and the hooded caftan with separate low armholes.
