Full pattern details

This princess-bodice tiered full slip sewing pattern is planned as a complete 1950s-inspired under-dress layer. A long shaped bodice reaches the low hip before opening into two gathered skirt tiers, giving the project a different construction from a separate petticoat or a smooth narrow slip.

The planned design

  • Narrow shoulder straps and a modest sweetheart front neckline, with a straight upper back.
  • Long front and back princess seams continue through the natural waist to the low hip; there is no waist seam.
  • Two gathered skirt tiers begin below the bodice and finish below the knee.
  • Narrow tonal lace accents at the neckline and skirt hem, with opaque backing at the upper edge.
  • A discreet left-side zip is planned for the opening.

Fabric and fitting

The dusty-rose preview shows matte opaque cotton broadcloth. Choose a lightweight woven fabric with enough opacity for the bodice and enough softness for the gathers. Check the lace, backing and zip together in your fitting sample. Compare bust, waist, hip, strap placement and bodice length before deciding where the low-hip skirt join should fall.

Compare the bodice construction

The 1930s-inspired low-back slip has small side-bust darts, a deep U back and bias-draped body, including a double-ruffle hem option. This design instead uses a long princess-seamed bodice on the straight grain, a higher straight rear edge and a low-hip join to the gathered skirt. Choose by bodice shaping and grain, rather than by hem trim alone.

One complete full-slip project

This order covers the full slip described here. A separate half petticoat, net support layer, bra or outer dress is not included. For a separate under-skirt layer, compare the 1950s-inspired structured petticoat. For other bodice and grain choices, explore slip and chemise sewing patterns.
