Develop a 1960s-inspired draped sheath in softly falling woven fabric. Released pleats at one shoulder shape the closed bodice, while a curved front overlay falls over a complete slim skirt.
A fitted sheath with two distinct layers of drape
- Modest shallow boat neckline and three released pleats at the wearer's left shoulder.
- Closed woven bodice with a separate seam at the natural waist.
- Plain three-quarter set-in sleeves.
- Small gathers at the left front waist shaping a separate curved overskirt above the complete closed base skirt.
- Mid-calf slim base skirt, closed darted back, center-back fastening and a short walking vent.
- Narrow self-fabric waist belt with a small side tie.
This order covers the single sleeved, mid-calf sheath described here. The front overlay is an extra layer over a complete skirt; it is not an opening that exposes the leg. Separate neckline, sleeve or hem variants are not included.
Fabric and fitting development
Planned for opaque soft woven crepe or another supple woven dress fabric with enough body to hold a clean base skirt and enough drape for the shoulder pleats and overlay. Stretch jersey is not the intended fabric. Fabric suitability and quantities will be established during preparation.
Allow time to assess shoulder placement, bust shaping, waist ease, hip movement and walking-vent comfort in a complete fitting sample. The overlay should hang freely without pulling the base skirt.
Compare the construction
The distinguishing construction combines fitted shoulder-released pleats with one curved front overlay over a complete slim skirt. It differs from the basic darted sheath, fixed-overlap jersey tulip dress, open-backed cowl wrap dress and loose 1910s bodice with angular hip panels. Compare the simple woven sheath; the ruched jersey tulip dress; the cowl-bodice wrap-skirt dress; the 1910s draped-hip dress.
