Compare three planned A-line constructions
| Design | Planned construction to compare |
|---|---|
| A-Line Knit Day Dress | Continuous body without a waist seam, separate set-in sleeves and a rounded knit neckband. Jersey recovery, shoulder fit and hem movement need checking in a sample. |
| 1960s-Inspired Shift Dress | Bust darts and a relaxed waist without a waist seam, sleeveless armholes and a slight above-knee flare. A stable woven is the starting fabric direction. |
| 1960s-Inspired Panel Dress | Vertical princess-style shaping seams continue through the waist into a lightly flared skirt. Short set-in sleeves and panels intended for optional colour blocking. |
Choose the shaping before the fabric
Start with the amount of waist definition you want. Bust darts with a relaxed waist differ from vertical seams that shape the body; neither is the same construction as the knit dress with a separate neckband. Check shoulder and armhole fit, bust room and the place where flare begins in a complete fitting sample. The final fabric specification, measurements and construction are confirmed during preparation.
Use the size guide to distinguish body measurements from finished garment dimensions. Browse all dress sewing patterns to compare other silhouettes.
